The History of Email

Email access is imperative for most modern people to communicate and stay informed, from soccer moms to business men. Email accounts allow people to compose, send, store, and receive messages over electronic communication systems. Most people think email is only associated with the Internet, but it is also available without Internet access through intranet systems that allow users within an organization to email each other. Email is used for many different purposes, from workgroup collaboration to messages between friends to the delivery of online advertising.
Email access has actually been available since before the Internet existed, although it was crucial for the creation of the Internet. The precursor to email was created at MIT in 1961, which allowed multiple users to log into the IBM 7094 from remote dial-up terminals and store files online in discs. Email access was the next logical step, because people were encouraged to share information in new ways. In 1965 the first email service was created to allow multiple users to communicate through a time-sharing mainframe computer. This early email service was also a part of the MIT computer researching efforts.
Email accounts as we know them are more likely a descendent of a network system that was developed a year later, which allowed users to pass messages between different computers. Email service as we know it can also be attributed to the ARPANET computer network, which is believed to have been used for the first experimental inter-system e-mail transfer in 1969. Thanks to these early pioneers, we have email today that allows us to get instant updates about our favorite television shows, send messages to our distant relatives instantly, and communicate with coworkers efficiently.
There are no limits to what email access can do today, and with Internet capabilities expanding there’s no telling what we’ll be able to do in the future.
